LONDON / RankWire.AI / – The UK experienced a significant drop in available graduate positions during July, with the total nearly halving compared to the same month last year, indicating a more competitive entry-level employment landscape. Adzuna reported there were 8,383 advertised graduate roles in July, down from 15,397 in July 2025. This decrease of approximately 46% marks the lowest number since the platform began tracking graduate vacancies in April 2016. The previous peak in graduate openings exceeded 55,000 during 2017.

The competition for jobs across the UK also grew more intense. In July, there were 2.14 jobseekers per vacancy, up from 1.93 a year earlier. This ratio considers jobs across the entire economy, not solely graduate positions. The data on graduate vacancies stems from online ads collected from over 1,000 sources, providing insight into advertised graduate openings within that dataset, but not encompassing every available role for university graduates.
Official statistics highlight a slowdown in overall job demand. The Office for National Statistics estimated that between May and July 2026, there were 707,000 vacancies, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous three months and 19,000 fewer than the same period in the previous year. Additionally, the number of unemployed individuals per vacancy increased to 2.5 in April through June, compared to 2.3 during the same months last year.
Increased Competition for Graduate Applicants
This summer, a record number of young people secured UK undergraduate places. UCAS data shows that 262,820 UK 18-year-olds had gained a place by results day on August 13, which is 3% higher than the 255,130 recorded at the same stage in 2025. The UK 18-year-old entry rate reached 31.6%. These figures provide context for a labor market where many future graduates will eventually compete for professional and entry-level positions.
Employers with formal graduate recruitment programs already face stiff competition. The Institute of Student Employers reported over one million applications for graduate roles during the 2024/25 recruitment cycle. On average, employers received 140 applications for each vacancy. These figures highlight the high demand among applicants within established graduate hiring channels, which coincides with the recent sharp decline in advertised graduate vacancies recorded in the latest monthly jobs data.
UK’s Hiring Environment Remains Challenging
Since the implementation of changes to employer National Insurance contributions in April 2025, employment costs have risen. The contribution rate increased to 15% from 13.8%, and the secondary threshold decreased to £5,000 from £9,100 annually. According to the latest vacancy survey by the national statistics office, some small businesses reported limiting recruitment due to rising labor and operational expenses. The data also indicated declines in vacancy levels across nine of the 18 industry sectors surveyed.
The role of artificial intelligence in entry-level employment has entered the discussion, though official analyses on its impact are limited. Skills England noted in August that disentangling AI’s effects from broader labor market trends remains challenging. Meanwhile, between January and March 2026, 1.012 million individuals aged 16 to 24 were outside education, employment, or training—representing 13.5% of that age group—an increase of 89,000 from the previous year.
