VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is advancing its development of BEACONSAT, the country’s first satellite designed for military purposes and the largest of its kind built domestically. This spacecraft will operate from low Earth orbit, focusing on detecting interference that impacts global navigation satellite systems. Its sensors will primarily target jamming and spoofing activities related to services like GPS and Galileo. The Austrian government intends to launch the approximately 32-kilogram satellite on a Falcon 9 rocket in February 2027.

In 2023, the ministry adopted a comprehensive military space strategy outlining development objectives through 2035 and beyond.
European and Austrian technological collaboration drives the satellite
Leading the BEACONSAT project is GATE Space, which provides key components such as propulsion, structural elements, and thermal management systems. Founded in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, GATE Space specializes in spacecraft propulsion, having conducted over 8,000 hot-fire tests under atmospheric and vacuum conditions. The project has also received around 750,000 euros from Austrian public funds aimed at advancing technology development.
Additional partners supply systems essential for the satellite’s navigation-monitoring functions. Graz-based IGASPIN contributes interference detection and analysis technology targeting global navigation satellite systems. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides further hardware, including the onboard computer. The European Space Agency supports the initiative through its Marketplace program, which facilitates testing of commercially developed space systems within operational environments as part of technology demonstration missions.
Launch to initiate Austria’s first military satellite mission
BEACONSAT will mainly focus on collecting interference data instead of carrying offensive or weaponized capabilities. It will observe signals from orbit, aiming to recognize patterns associated with jamming and spoofing. According to information released in 2026, the Austrian Defence Ministry has allocated approximately 1 million euros to this project. The satellite’s deployment in 2027 will initially serve as a research platform and technology demonstrator.
The February 2027 launch will represent Austria’s debut military satellite mission. SpaceX will launch BEACONSAT aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, as part of the planned mission schedule. After deployment, the satellite will gather data on disruptions to satellite navigation services and relay this information for further analysis. This initiative provides Austria with an orbital asset dedicated to studying GNSS interference while also testing space technologies for military and security use.
