London / EuroWire / – A collaborative scientific investigation highlights how anthropogenic global warming is directly responsible for the severe arid conditions currently affecting Europe, offering compelling evidence that climate change is intensifying droughts across the continent. Researchers from around the world concluded that rising temperatures are the primary cause behind the deeply dried environment, surpassing the impacts of mere rainfall deficits. Following a historic heatwave in June, the region is now battling destructive wildfires, stringent water restrictions, and severely lowered water levels. The study demonstrates that today’s elevated temperatures drive rapid moisture loss from soils and water bodies, significantly increasing the probability of extreme drought conditions. Even though spring rainfall fell below historical averages, the heat brought on by climate change amplified the overall drought severity.

The World Weather Attribution group published findings detailing how increasing temperatures actively diminish natural water supplies. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is not primarily caused by reduced rainfall but by a warmer atmosphere causing greater moisture deficits on land. This means that even in regions where rainfall patterns remain relatively stable, the risk of drought continues to escalate. Scientists explain that a warmer atmosphere can hold about seven percent more water vapor per one degree Celsius rise in temperature. This greater capacity directly leads to increased evaporation from soil and plant life across broad areas.
Using extensive climate data and advanced modeling, researchers compared today’s hotter climate with a hypothetical scenario where global temperatures were 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their analysis shows that soils in western Europe are now five times more prone to extreme dryness than in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern europe, these same soil moisture deficits are 11 times more likely. Additionally, the study found that the high evaporative demand observed from April to June in western Europe has become roughly 80 times more probable. This indicates that rainfall deficits that previously did not cause severe droughts now lead to much drier soils, heightening drought risks.
Temperature Rise and the Atmosphere’s Increased Thirst
Dominik Schumacher from ETH Zurich highlighted that the tendency for soils to dry out abnormally during spring is already evident before summer arrives. He explained that as temperatures increase, the atmosphere’s capacity to draw moisture intensifies rapidly, pulling water from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soils. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year followed by intense heat created ideal conditions for large wildfires. The rapid soil drying set the stage for widespread fires across several nations. The analysis confirms that climate change-driven droughts are altering traditional weather patterns, creating increasingly dangerous cycles across Europe.
Agriculture is experiencing unprecedented stress due to the widespread loss of vital soil moisture. Drought conditions have severely impacted farming communities, resulting in historic crop failures across multiple borders. France is projected to have its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, indicating a major disruption in regional food production. Meanwhile, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further jeopardizing the agricultural supply chain. These domestic shortages, combined with ongoing global conflicts, threaten to raise food prices and disproportionately impact low-income households.
Water Vapor Capacity Growth with Rising Temperatures
Hydrological effects are worsening the economic repercussions, with unusually low river levels disrupting vital cargo transportation routes. Major shipping disruptions on key waterways reflect the escalating severity of the water scarcity crisis across Europe. Reduced flows in large rivers threaten energy production in regions heavily reliant on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that recent June was the hottest on record in western Europe. Many nations have already imposed emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve dwindling supplies.
Scientists warn that without decisive action, current drought conditions could become more frequent as global temperatures continue to rise. Experts note that these intense evaporative conditions are already happening at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the immediate danger posed by current emission levels. If temperatures increase to 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of such conditions could double. Without urgent and substantial reductions in global emissions, the continent faces a future of increasingly scorching and arid summers, experts caution.
